•• 2010 WINNERS

Horses have always been a frequent subject in my art. These particular horses, while running together as a pair, portray opposite emotions: freedom and fear. One runs wild with fear, while the other runs wild in pure freedom. In my art I have always been most comfortable with realism. My comfort went so far, however, that I was afraid to move beyond my tight, familiar style. At some point I had to face my fear, and when doing so I was able to discover the freedom of simply playing with the paint on my brush to create something exciting. So I did the same for this piece, going for a more playful and energetic feel in the use of bright, non-realistic colors and loose brush strokes. Not only are freedom and fear opposite of each other, but often there is a freedom that can only be found in facing ones fears.

I am a senior art major at Malone University with emphases in painting, drawing and graphic design. After graduating, I plan to continue making art while following whatever path God has planned for me.

How Most Things Are Born
22"X17"

Haele Aryn Wolfe has been passionate about the arts ever since she was a child. Besides the fine arts, she enjoys reading, writing and many forms of dance. Haele is currently concentrating on watercolor and ink mediums before attending college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York this fall. She is a recent graduate of Medina Senior High School, and would like to thank all her art teachers from grade school to high school for a wonderful education in the arts, especially Elaine Taylor. In college, Haele hopes to study creative writing and illustration, combining her dual love of both writing and art. As an artist, she enjoys working in fine detail which allows her to not only create something interesting and beautiful, but tell a story as well. A love of literature has fueled Haele's passion for storytelling; she hopes to one day become a publisher author and illustrator of children's books and novels. Haele is honored to have her artwork chosen by the Ohio Watercolor Society and would like to thank everyone involved for this amazing opportunity.

•• 2009 WINNERS

As an assignment we were asked to illustrate and Idlom. This one appealed to me because it reminded me of myself "Head in the Clouds," I am a thinker often unaware of my surroundings until something startling blasts me into reality. The use of watercolor (gauche) in black allowed me to manipulate tones in the image to carry the idea of having your head in the clouds to the viewer as both comical and dreamy. Sometimes it is even a good thing to step away from oneself for a while.

As a graduate of Beavercreek High School, I just completed my first year as a graphic design student at the School of Advertising Art in Kettering, OH. Although I am studying graphic design, fine arts have been one of my main passions, and I look forward to using the skills I have learned for my future career.

PAUL CONOVER
Troy Christian High School, OH

Falling Watercolor

My life as Paul Conover has consisted of a series of enjoyable circumstances. A senior at Troy Christian High School this fall, I give credit to God, who makes everything possible. Working hard at academics, the ability to think and reason has led to my serious outlook toward school.

A member of the National Honors Society, I also enjoy extracurricular activities. These include playing on both the baseball and basketball team and my weekly church youth group.

One of sixteen students chosen from across the country, I was selected by the College Board to serve on the Advisory Panel for Student Concerns. The idea behind this is to get a student's perspective on the different services that the College Board offers.

Architecture is my career path. Passionate about the process of design and construction of buildings and structures, a building is the perfect blend of technical and aesthetic considerations. There is much that must be analyzed and thought out before the first hole can be dug or the first nail pounded. It is a mood, a sensation, a dwelling. Participating in the American Institute of Architects' Student Design Competition for the past two years, I took second place two years ago.

A building takes the observer inside the mind of It's architect, even if the movement is subconscious. I want to be the catalyst that raises the question, "If man's inventiveness has not found limits, how much more creative and ingenious are the works of an Infinite and Almighty God?"

•• 2008 WINNERS
I have always been fascinated by eyes; they have so much character and so much life. They show the emotion and energy of a person. Through these series I want to explore the relationship of animals and humans. I feel this relationship is often ignored, or even exploited. I want to bring them to our level, not as a lower life forms to be used and abused, but as a life as unique as our own.

I am interested in the old proverb, "Eyes are the window to the soul," because I feel like the soul of humans and animals alike can be seen though the eyes. If animals have souls, don't we have the responsibility to treat each and everyone one of them so?

Triptych of Laura

My artwork is about intensity and emotion using images of my friends. I tried to convey three strong emotions , rage, surprise and elation, through color selection, texture and brush strokes. I love experimenting with watercolor and selected the media because I felt it was good for portraying expression.

Katie Baron, 17, is a junior at Ft. Hayes Metropolitan Education Center's Art and Academic High School and Commercial Art Career program. She is also in Advanced Placement Art and has recently completed and AP portfolio for the College Board.

Katie also attends the Columbus College of Art and Design Saturday and Summer Art Classes where she has studied since a child. She will be attending the College Preview this summer at CCAD.

Her work has been shown in many exhibitions including the current Ft. Hayes AP exhibition, Scholastics and other local and state exhibitions.

Ivy Garrigan
The Showma

Ivy Garrigan ~ "Now in my senior year, I have become completely immersed in my Art IV class and have started to think of where art could take me later in life. In addition to my talent in art, I have been enthralled with biological science. When I found that I could have a career involving a perfect marriage of my two favorite subjects, science and art, I could hardly believe it. I hope to pursue this dream of mine and turn it into reality through attending the Cleveland Institute of Art.
My Painting, "The Showman", is all about the energy involved in the performing arts. I am actively involved in our drama club and have been in productions before. Experiencing all the excitement of being on stage is almost overwhelming. But when the last line is said and done, and the curtains are drawn, there is something almost serene about the ending. This man and his dancers have just sung the last line of the last song. This is the finale, their climactic pose, and at the end of the night they will be going home to their beds completely fulfilled because they brought down the house, standing ovation and all."
